Gym is closed temporarily
TRYON—Renovations have begun at the Harmon Field open-air gymnasium.
The project started recently in honor of Mason Lassiter’s vision to make the basketball court safe and upgraded.
People should know that the court is temporarily closed while floor work is being done. There are signs up with caution tape but there has been four-wheelers riding on the surface. Project organizers are asking the public to stay off the court until the floor is finished.
Lassiter, a 17-year old junior at the Polk County Early College died last year as he was working on improving the courts for his senior project.
Lassiter had raised almost $11,000 for the project prior to his death and his family and friends decided to continue his vision and renovate the courts in his memory.
Lassiter, who lived in Tryon and played on the courts wanted to resurface the floor, replace the goals, add benches, a trash can and a water fountain and have a mural painted.
