Avery spoiled Polk County’s Western Highlands Conference wrestling opener on Thursday, handing the Wolverines a 60-21 defeat in Newland.
The Vikings, defending WHC champions and state 1A semifinalists a year ago, won 10 matches by fall. Polk County’s Brennan Worthington had the lone win on the mat for the Wolverines, scoring a 7-1 victory at 138 pounds over Tristan Adams.
Tori Strickland, Collier Foster and Trey Thompson received wins by forfeit for the remainder of Polk County’s points.
Polk County is set to compete Saturday in the Royal Viking Classic at North Wilkes High School.
