Locally grown talent returns to WNC
Tony Grant, a Grammy-nominated musician, actor, writer and producer, and well known for his work with TV and film director Tyler Perry, kicks off Tryon Fine Arts Center’s inaugural Crowd Pleasers concert series on Saturday, December 14 at 7:30 p.m.
Two WNC Counties can enjoy bragging rights to being Tony’s hometown. The nationally known artist spent elementary school years at Tryon School. He finished his high school career at East Rutherford in Rutherford County.
Although he grew up in a musical family, Grant always excelled at sports throughout his elementary and high school years and he secured a scholarship to play college football at the University of Tennessee. While at UT, Grant performed in and won a talent competition. This win, along with a string of others that followed, served as a catalyst to his successful career in the entertainment industry.
A recording artist since the 90’s, Grant achieved his initial fame as the lead vocalist of the internationally acclaimed, Grammy-nominated group AzYet. It was Grant’s smooth tenor voice that held audiences enthralled on hit songs including “Last Night” and “Hard to Say I’m Sorry.” He went on to perform and record with an array of accomplished artists including Brian McKnight, Dr. Dre, Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, James Brown, Celine Dion, Stevie Wonder and Harry Connick Jr.
“We’re fortunate to present a performer the caliber of Tony Grant on Tryon Fine Arts Center’s stage,” says Executive Director Marianne Carruth. “We’re proud to bring him home to Polk County to share his remarkable talent with our neighbors!”
