“Never be afraid to raise your voice for honesty and truth and compassion against
injustice and lying and greed. If people all over the world…would do this, it would
change the earth.” ~ William Faulkner
Since this is the month of thanksgiving, I thought it might be a good time to bring up
proper table manners for folks who gather ‘round the table. There’s nothing like a
primer on etiquette. Just call me Miss B. Havin’ Manners, if you need a refresher
course.
First of all: put the phone away, turn it off at the dinner table. Look at one another.
That’s a positive start! Do not pick ANYTHING. That includes nails, nose, teeth. Do not
scratch your head, do not scratch under your arms.
For goodness sake, close your mouth when chewing. Yes, YOU. I know it’s hard to talk
and chew at the same time…but whatever it is you want to say can wait a minute. Or use
sign language. Chew and spew just doesn’t get it with the others who are stuck at the
table watching food bits spraying as you bellow.
Say thank you. Often. Let someone else have the bigger piece. Fix a bowl for four-legged
friends. They make us thankful. (It is forgiven if your four-legged friend chews with
mouth open. Not you. Shut the trap door when full.)
On that short lesson in good manners just in time for turkeys, I’m down at Fernandina
Beach if you’re reading this, and am grateful old Silver made it that far. Every squeak,
rattle, and burnt oil smell made me cringe on that long trip through rain, coastal fog,
and 18-wheelers. I’m remembering to chew my food, and the only thing I’m picking is
shells on the beach, walking a November sea, missing River’s company along sandy
paths.
