Scrimmage didn’t turn out as planned
LANDRUM—On Friday August 9, the Cardinals took on the Liberty High School Red Devils in a preseason scrimmage.
The Cardinals hosted the Cardinal Classic on Friday, which saw three friendly preseason games played. Broome played Blacksburg, Chapman took on Byrnes, and Landrum faced off against Liberty in the final game of the night.
The Cardinals got off to a rough start against Liberty, in the opening seven minutes of play Liberty was able to score two touchdowns and convert both extra points, giving them a 14-0 lead over the Cardinals very early into the game. After giving up the second touchdown, the Cardinals stepped up their defense and held the Red Devils at just 14 points for the remainder of the game.
The Cardinals managed to get a safety in the second quarter of play and convert a twelve-yard run for a touchdown bringing the score line to 14-9. But the Cardinals couldn’t finish the Red Devils off and ultimately lost the game 14-9 after the final whistle.
The Thursday before the game was the first day that the Cardinals had full contact practice, which could clearly be seen in the early portion of the scrimmage against Liberty. There was some sloppy defending and missed chances but the Cardinals grew into the game as the minutes passed.
The Cardinals begin the season away on August 17, at Broome High School in a non-conference game. The Cardinals will play two away games to start the season before playing their first home game on August 30, against Dixie High School.
