Local agencies ask for help identifying suspect

Man has passed counterfeit money at Columbus, Tryon businesses

COLUMBUS — A suspect has been passing counterfeit money at area businesses, and local police departments are asking for the public’s help identifying him.

Impacted businesses include the Columbus ABC Store, Subway, Dollar General and reportedly Food Lion, with officials believing the suspect to have also passed counterfeit bills at Tryon businesses.

The Tryon Police Department said the most recent businesses affected were Subway and Dollar General on Saturday.

The suspect is a young black male, who has been seen wearing hoodie sweatshirts, including black, grey and yellow ones. Most recently, the suspect was seen wearing dark blue jeans. The suspect has been caught on at least a couple business’ surveillance cameras.

The vehicles the suspect is believed to have used include a silver 2000-2005 Honda Accord or Honda Civic, with a paper tag, or a silver Dodge or Chrysler van.

Columbus Police Chief Scott Hamby said the Columbus Police Department is still searching for the suspect and is asking for the public’s help.
