Conserving Carolina will host a free lecture, titled “Pesky Plants – Non-native and Invasive Species,” which will be presented by Max Howes, an AmeriCorps Project Conserve member serving as Conserving Carolina’s Southeast habitat restoration, volunteer coordinator and trails associate for his second term.
The program will take place at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, at the Landrum Library, 111 East Asbury Drive, Landrum.
Looking in any direction, one may spot plants such as kudzu, tree of heaven or English ivy, as these are just a handful of the several commonly found non-native and invasive plant species in the local region.
Howes will discuss these exotic plants, which have taken over significant parts of the region. He will also discuss some of the common species found in the area and teach participants how to identify these plants in the wild. Howes will discuss how some of these species were introduced to the area and offer suggestions about how to remove and eradicate them as well.
The lecture is part of Conserving Carolina’s monthly Speaker Series at the Landrum Library, which is made possible thanks to a grant from the Spartanburg Community Foundation and the Friends of the Landrum Library.
The next program at the Landrum Library will be held at 6 p.m. Feb. 7, when nationally-recognized moss landscape designer Annie Martin, a.k.a. “Mossin’ Annie,” will present “Moss Magic in your Landscape.”
