Hundreds pack downtown for Tryon Midnight event

The rain clouds let up for just a little while Monday evening, which allowed the hundreds who lined Trade Street to ring in the New Year alongside family, friends and neighbors. The town of Tryon hosted its annual Tryon Midnight block party that evening, with attendees enjoying free food and music during the event, which was held in front of the town’s clocktower. Despite the fact the rain began to pour again right before the 10 p.m. ball drop, nearly everyone in attendance stayed to witness the Tryon tradition — and remained as Dean Trakas and Andy Millard dropped the ball a second time minutes later in honor of the late Jim Jackson, a beloved fixture of Tryon for decades who passed away last summer.
