Ruth Pauline Sutherin

Ruth Pauline Sutherin, 87, of Columbus, North Carolina, passed away at St. Luke’s Hospital in Columbus on Oct. 30, 2018.

Ruth was born in Akron, Ohio, to the late the Rev. John Campbell Fulton and Auleen Bertha Rhodes. 

She graduated Carnegie Tech with a bachelor’s in food science. After college, she worked an internship at Mass General Hospital in Boston.

Most of her career she worked as a registered dietitian at The Medical Center of Beaver County in Beaver, Pennsylvania, and retired as the food service director.

In February 1955, Ruth married Jim Sutherin. Together they had two sons.

In 1988, after her retirement, Ruth and Jim moved to Tryon, North Carolina. Ruth was very active in the local community.

She was a member of Tryon Presbyterian Church, where she served on the session and in the choir.  She was a member of the Carolines and volunteered on the board of elections. In 2003, Ruth and Jim moved to Tryon Estates in Columbus.

In addition to her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by a brother, William. C. Fulton.

Surviving are her husband of 63 years, Jim Sutherin; son, the Rev. Daniel Sutherin (Melinda) of Plainfield, Indiana, and their two children, Brittany and Jim; son, Thomas Sutherin (Stefan) of Las Cruces, New Mexico, and their children Olivia and Michael; three sisters-in-law, Shirley Palmer (Charles), Vivian Kosto, and Flora Fulton; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
