Benefit for injured trainer to take place Thursday at Camp Wayfarer

FLAT ROCK — Known for always having a smile on her face, the community is now rallying for Alison Leclerc, a Polk County equestrian trainer who fell off her horse in June and suffered paralysis. A fundraiser for Leclerc’s therapy and medical bills will be from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday, at Camp Wayfarer, located at One Red Bird Song Road, Flat Rock, just outside downtown Saluda.

Leclerc moved to the area four years ago and boards her horses in Columbus. She trained in Germany, Canada and Mexico and has always been known to help others. She is currently undergoing therapy at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta. Fellow equestrian Lisa Baugh said Leclerc always has a smile on her face when she comes to ride. “She’s one of those people who works very hard, yet never looks burned out,” Baugh said. “We all miss her terribly, and her courage and tenacity in the face of her injuries is totally amazing and inspirational. Can’t wait to see her smiling face again.”

Fellow equine trainer Martha Kemmer said Leclerc has been her friend since she first moved to the area. “She is one of the hardest working equine professionals I have ever known, and always has a smile for everyone,” Kem-mer said. Equine professional and friend Anita Williamson said she has never seen Leclerc when she was not smiling. “She has such a pleasant outlook and strong work ethic,” Williamson said. “Kind, quiet and pleasant — all attributes we all need.” Camp Wayfarer owner Nan-cy Z. Wilson said Leclerc’s commitment to her horses and their training is amazing. “Beautiful in every way, Alison always has the steady, hard working attitude that just makes you want to be a better person,” Wilson said. Of the fundraising Thursday, 100 percent will go toward Leclerc’s therapy and medical bills, many of which are not being covered by insurance. There will be barbecue and music, a silent auction and events for children. Tickets can be purchased at biddingowl.com/Auction/home. cfm?auctionID=16231, or by contacting Wilson at nancy@campwayfarer.com or 828-243-5052. Checks can also be dropped off at the Farm House or mailed to: Camp Wayfarer, P.O. Box 850, Flat Rock, NC 28731.
