Agnes Matteson Sternberg

Agnes Matteson Sternberg, 100, of Tryon, North Carolina, passed away on Monday, Sept. 25, 2018, at White Oak Manor in Tryon.

Agnes was born in Davidson, Saskatchewan, Canada, to the late Guy Raymond Matteson and Kathryn King Matteson; she grew up in Canada until the age of 7, when her family moved to Aurora, Illinois. 

In 1942, she married Harlow G. Sternberg. They moved to Miami, where he was stationed for training.  Upon completion of his training, they moved to Colorado, where he was stationed. 

In 1945, they had their first son, Harlow G. Sternberg Jr. Once the war ended, they moved to Aurora and, in 1949, had their second son, Gregory D. Sternberg. 

In 1977, they relocated to the Tryon area, building their first home on Glenwalden Lane and later moved to the Gillette Woods Community in Tryon. 

Agnes was very active with the Tryon Arts and Crafts School, where she taught weaving for almost 20 years. In 1998, Agnes moved to White Oak Village in Tryon.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harlow G. Sternberg, in 1989; a sister, Lois Best; and a brother, Ray Matteson.

Agnes is survived by two sons, Harlow G. Sternberg Jr. and his wife, Helen, of Gray, Maine, and Gregory D. Sternberg and his wife, Pam, of Paradise Valley, Arizona. Also surviving are five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, 2018, in the Activity Room at White Oak Manor.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Tryon Arts and Crafts School, 373 Harmon Field Road, Tryon, NC 28782.
