Polk County Middle bounced back from its first loss of the season with a 2-1 win Wednesday at Hendersonville Middle.
The Polk fifth quarter team also earned a win, a 25-14 victory.
A day after a loss to Apple Valley, the Wolverines (3-1) dropped the opening set at Hendersonville, but rebounded to take the final two sets. Polk Middle played without eighth-grade captain Adair Edwards, currently unavailable for action.
“We made some lineup changes before the second set and thrust a few girls into new roles,” said Polk Middle head coach Matthew Russell. “Ada Kelley and Susanna Ashworth stepped up in a big way for us with their serves, and each of them went on a five-plus streak of points off serve to put the second set away.
“In the third set, we battled back and forth, and eventually scored off a net violation to go up 15-11. Our girls thought the match was over but we were told that the third set would be played to 25. The girls did a great job of collecting themselves, and Ella Waldman carried us with her serve, notching several aces and we scored 10 of the next 11 points to close out the set 25-12.”
Polk County Middle will be back in action on Monday, hosting Flat Rock.
