Over the Top to open Tuesday with classical music
Published 8:00 am Friday, August 31, 2018
Blue Ridge String Quartet and pianist Kymric Mahnke will perform a selection of classical music at Tryon Fine Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
The musicians open Over the Top, a week of art experiences that takes place Tuesday through Saturday at TFAC.
Over the Top is a kickoff and fundraiser for TFAC’s Capital Campaign, which is intended to raise funds to address flexibility, accessibility and efficiency of the 50-year-old building. All ticket proceeds and community donations from the week of art, music, theater and visual arts will help put the campaign “over the top”.
All artists for the week, including Blue Ridge String Quartet and Kymric Mahnke, have donated their talents in support of Over the Top.
Blue Ridge String Quartet has actively performed in major venues across the western Carolinas since 2013. Two new members of the Quartet, second violinist Eben Mann and cellist Katie Hamilton, join first violinist John Malloy and violist Jan Daugherty for this Over the Top opening night recital.
The Quartet will open their concert with Ludwig von Beethoven’s middle period String Quartet Op. 59 No. 3 (3rd Razumovsky) in C Major, followed by one of William Bolcom’s Rags for String Quartet. After intermission, they will be joined by pianist Kymric Mahnke in a performance of Robert Schumann’s radiant Piano Quintet in E-flat Major, Op. 44.
Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for a complimentary reception for ticket holders.
Over the Top will continue on Wednesday with a morning “Great Courses” art lecture and a 7:30 p.m. performance from local church choirs. Thursday will feature a reception and art show from White Oak residents and an evening performance in the amphitheater.
On Thursday there will be a “Great Courses” music discussion and evening performance from the Jim Peterman Band. The week will wrap up on Saturday with local music students taking the stage in the morning and Tryon’s stars performing Showtunes and Standards Saturday evening.
