Horace A. Smith

Horace A. Smith, 87, of Columbus, NC passed away, Monday morning, February 5, 2018 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Born in Polk County, NC on January 1, 1931, he was the son of the late James L. and Minnie Champion Smith and was married to Margaret Hines Smith who died in 1992. Following four years in the United States Navy, Horace joined Tryon Bank and Trust Company in 1955. He served the bank and its successors in various capacities during his 37-year career and retired as a vice president from NationsBank, now Bank of America, in 1992.

Mr. Smith served the community in numerous volunteer positions. He was President of the Tryon Kiwanis Club, and served as a member and vice chairman of the board at St. Luke’s Hospital. He was a member of the board of Polk County Community Foundation, having served as its President and Chairman. He was a member of the board of Alltel North Carolina for many years. He was a member of Columbus Baptist Church and had attended First Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg.

Surviving are four daughters, Marci S. Richardson (Charles) of Tampa, FL, Ann S. Hall (Brian) of Columbia, SC, Janet S. Conner (Jeff) of Holmes Beach, FL and Amy S. Tiernan (Dan) of Lighthouse Point, FL.  Also surviving are twelve grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.

A funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 12, 2018 in the McFarland Funeral Chapel, Tryon, NC with Dr. T. Furman Hewitt officiating.

Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens, Columbus, NC.

The family will receive friends prior to the service Monday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral chapel.
