Panchyshyn, Watkins earn runner-up finishes at WHC wrestling tourney

Polk County’s Devin Panchyshyn and Triston Watkins each placed second Friday in their respective weight classes at the Western Highlands Conference wrestling tournament in Newland.
Panchyshyn dropped a 5-3 decision to Mitchell’s Hudson Boone in the championship match in the 285-pound class. He earlier defeated Mountain Heritage’s San Newman 12-5 in the semifinals.
Watkins reached the final with a first-period pin of Mountain Heritage’s Leeann Peterson. He then dropped a 13-4 decision to Madison’s Zachary Marlow in the final.
Three Wolverines brought home third-place finishes. Preston Burnett took third at 126 pounds, Dillon Knighton placed third at 152 pounds and Hayden Shumate finished third at 195 pounds.
Burnett defeated Mountain Heritage’s Dalton McIntosh 6-3 in the consolation final, while Knighton decisioned Owen’s Bruce Williams 10-7 and Shutmate decisioned Mitchell’s Jose Guardian 13-8.
Polk County’s Evan Miller, Chris Rickman, Mitchell Yoder and Trey Thompson each took fourth in their weight classes.
Madison finished with 183.5 points to win the conference tourney team title, edging out Mitchell, who finished with 183 points.
