Elbert Morton Carpenter

Elbert Morton Carpenter, 85, of Tryon, N.C., passed away on January 5, 2018, at his home. He was the widower of Sue Carpenter, who passed in 2016. He was born in Bostic, N.C., the son of William Raymond and Gladys Philbeck Carpenter.
Mr. Carpenter was retired from the Great A&P Tea Company supermarket chain. He joined the company in 1952 and retired in 1994. He was the store manager in Tryon from 1967 until his retirement in 1994. He was a lifelong Methodist and had been a member of Tryon United Methodist Church since 1967.
Mr. Carpenter is survived by his son James and wife Tracey of Swannanoa, N.C.; his son Charles and wife Pam of Cherryville, N.C.; his son Richard of Tryon, N.C.; and four grandchildren: Courtney of Raleigh, Bryan of Swannanoa, Cannon of New Bern, and Erich of Morganton. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, January 8, 2018 in Tryon United Methodist Church, Tryon, N.C. with Rev. Phil Hurst officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Sunday, January 7, 2018 in McFarland Funeral Chapel, Tryon, N.C.
Burial will be in Sunshine United Methodist Church Cemetery, Bostic, N.C.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Tryon United Methodist Church Building Fund.
