Varsity men’s games back on schedule next week
LANDRUM – Following incidents after the Polk County men’s varsity basketball game at Landrum on Friday, Dec. 15, several Polk County students received disciplinary action, according to Polk County Schools Supt. Aaron Greene.
“Polk County Schools has completed its investigation of the events taking place immediately following the Polk High and Landrum men’s varsity basketball game on Dec. 15, 2017,” Greene said in a statement Thursday afternoon, Dec. 28.
“Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken in reference to any violations of board of education policy, or school team or team rules that occurred.
“PCHS maintains high expectations for our students, athletes and fans, and we look forward to moving ahead in a positive direction. Please contact Superintendent Aaron Greene with any further inquiry regarding this situation.”
Greene did confirm that several Polk County High School students did receive disciplinary action, but that no specific information will be given due to the confidential nature of student records.
All remaining men’s varsity basketball games will be played as scheduled.
Polk County men’s varsity games were cancelled or rescheduled prior to the Christmas break following the Landrum game and another altercation that took place during the men’s varsity game at North Buncombe High School on Wednesday, Dec. 13. A fight broke out during halftime of the men’s varsity game at North Buncombe, located in Weaverville, between a Polk and North Buncombe student following alleged racial comments being made by North Buncombe students towards Polk players.
Polk County forfeited the North Buncombe game and left during halftime of the men’s varsity game.
North Buncombe officials said last week they concluded their investigation and disciplined three North Buncombe students following the Polk game.
Immediately following the Landrum game, a Polk County student was arrested.
