A promising start Wednesday night for Polk County’s girls basketball team slipped away – almost literally.

The Wolverines struggled with turnovers in the second half of their home opener en route to a 54-38 setback against R-S Central.

Polk County (0-2) led much of the first half, and built an eight-point advantage late in the second quarter before the Hilltoppers (2-1) rallied to make it a 24-22 Polk lead at the intermission.

R-S Central continued to ride that momentum in the third period, slowly pulling away as the Wolverines found it tough to generate successful offensive possessions.

“Those little shots that we’re missing now, we’re making great moves to get open and those shots are going to start falling,” said Polk County head coach Brandy Alm. “We’re making small improvements each game, though there’s a lot of little things we still have to work on.

“The girls will keep working as they always do. They work so hard.”

Autumn Owen had 16 points and four rebounds to lead Polk County, with Ansley Lynch adding 11 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Bella Marino, Kristen Hall, Sara Muse, Julia Griffin and Rachael Davis each scored two points for Polk.

The Wolverines return to their home court on tonight, hosting Landrum at 6:30 p.m.
