COLUMBUS-The Polk County Tourism Department and Foothills Chamber of Commerce teamed up again recently to update new road maps for the county and each of its towns and Landrum.
The Polk County Board of Commissioners met Nov. 20 and heard from tourism director Melinda Massey.
Massey said the recent updated map was done without asking businesses to advertise like previous maps.
The original map was done in 2011 through the tourism department and the chamber.
The new maps include a map of all Polk County roads that stretches into Landrum and Campobello, S.C., with an index of every road, as well as individual maps of the towns of Columbus and Tryon and cities of Landrum and Saluda.
The map also includes points of interest, including FENCE, local fire departments, schools, lakes, byways, Pearson’s Falls, Shunkawauken Falls/Sunset Rock, St. Luke’s Hospital and the Tryon International Equestrian Center.
The map has local mountain views as well and names each mountain, including Hogback, Rocky Spur, Melrose, Warrior, Round, Miller, Tryon Peak, White Oak and Little White Oak.
Local airport distances are available as well, such as Asheville, Greenville/Spartanburg, Charlotte and Atlanta.
Massey said a lot of effort was made to ensure the map is accurate and highlights the main travel routes.
She said there were 15,000 maps printed so they are expected to last quite a few years.
Residents are encouraged to pick up one free map, which are available from the First Peak Visitor’s Center in Columbus, in each town, the chamber and the Mill Spring Agriculture Center. Additional maps can be purchased for $1 each from the visitor’s center.
