I Saw America Bleed Today

I saw America bleed today
Not red, nor white nor blue,
But black, and brown, and ashen gray,
Covering streets, and buildings
And faces with tears streaming through.
I saw America lie down today
Her spirit mauled and crushed,
As rescue then recovery began
And the tone was reverent and hushed.
I saw America struggle today
With the hurt and the shock and the fear,
As people from every part of the land
Shed a large collective tear.
I saw America stand back up
Proudly and bravely and free.
And though my heart breaks for all we have lost,
I know the best is yet to be.
