Jack M. Phillips, 88, loving and loved husband, father, and exceptional “Grandpa Jack,” passed away peacefully on July 18, 2017 at the Smith-Phayer Hospice House in Landrum, S.C.
He was the son of the late Jesse Alexander and Maude McCurry Phillips and a lifelong resident of Polk County, N.C.
A US Army veteran, Jack retired from Karastan-Bigelow Landrum Mills plant in 1990. He also volunteered and retired from the Tryon Fire Department after 20 years of service and was named fireman of the year in 1976. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed his time camping, fishing, and hunting with family and friends. Most importantly, he knew Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. He was a member of Midway Baptist Church.
He is survived by wife Frances of 62 years and sons Steve (Marian) of Charlotte, N.C., and Kevin of York, S.C. He adored and always spoke fondly of his five grandsons, Michael, Seth, Matt, Joe, and Justin; two great-grandsons, Keegan and Noah; and two great-granddaughters, Mary Katherine and Isla.
He was preceded in death by brothers Melvin and Floyd, and sisters Helen Rodgers and Shirley Edwards.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 21, 2017 in the McFarland Funeral Chapel, Tryon, NC with Rev. Peter McDonald and Mr. William Mills officiating.
Interment will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens, Columbus, N.C.
The family will receive from prior to the service Friday from 1-1:45 p.m. at the funeral chapel.
