Hendersonville’s Eden Hawkins scored the winning goal with just over six minutes remaining Tuesday night to lift the Bearcats to a 2-1 win over Polk County in a Western Highlands Conference girls soccer showdown at Dietz Field.
With the win, the Bearcats (16-1, 11-0) clinched the WHC title and dropped Polk County (13-5, 9-3) into a second-place tie with Owen. The Warhorses defeated Mitchell 4-0 on Tuesday.
The game marked the final time the two teams will play as conference rivals for at least the next four years as Hendersonville moves next season to the Mountain Six Conference.
A Hawkins goal early in the second half broke a scoreless tie, but Polk County responded as Addie Lynch scored in the latter stages of the half to even the match at 1-1.
That tie held until Hawkins scored her second game-winning goal of the season against Polk County; she had the lone score in Hendersonville’s 1-0 win earlier this year.
Polk County concluded its regular season on Thursday, hosting Erwin at 7 p.m.
