Calvin C. Wilson, 92, of Sunny View, N.C. passed away Monday morning, Dec. 12, 2016 in the Hospice Unit of the Charles George VA Medical Center, Asheville, N.C.
A native of Sunny View, N.C., he was the son of the late Curtis and Ollie Searcy Wilson and husband of the late Vanelle Jackson Wilson who died Nov. 4, 2016. Calvin was a veteran of WWII having served in the European Theater where his regiment was captured during the Battle of the Bulge. He spent several months in a prisoner of war camp. For thirty years, he was active in the construction industry, building many homes and structures throughout the area. After retiring, he, with his son, ran a produce business at the WNC Farmers Market in Asheville, N.C. while also farming and operating greenhouses. He retired for the last time at the age of 82.
Calvin believed in hard work, loved his family and friends and always had a zest for life. He will be missed greatly. He was a member of Coopers Gap Baptist Church for over 50 years.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by five brothers and sisters.
Surviving is his son, Gene Wilson; one brother, Clarence “Buster” Wilson (Ailene) all of Sunny View, N.C. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6-7:30 p.m. in the Coopers Gap Baptist Church.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, 2016 in the Coopers Gap Baptist Church with Rev. Donald Hollifield and Rev. Warren Elliott officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors conducted by the Polk County Veteran’s Memorial Honor Guard.
