Republicans out-voted Democrats by almost 1K in 2016 election

COLUMBUS – Republicans out-voted both Democrats and Unaffiliated voters during the 2016 election, with all Republicans winning in Polk County in affiliated races.

The 2016 election results were made official last Tuesday, Nov. 22 with registered Republicans casting 4,977 votes, compared to 3,778 registered Unaffiliated votes, 3,088 registered Democrat votes and 35 registered Libertarian votes.

A total of 10,966 votes were cast in Polk County out of 16,076 total registered voters, meaning the county had a 68.41 percent turnout.

Most of Polk County’s votes were cast by white people at 10,250 votes, compared to 428 votes cast by blacks, 173 cast by undecided, 136 cast by other and nine cast by American Indian.

Women also cast the most votes in Polk County compared to men. There were 5,930 female votes cast this year compared to 4,969 male votes and 97 undesignated, according to the Polk County Board of Elections.

Women cast more votes in every township this year over men.

The Tryon Township had the most voters this year at 2,202, followed by Green Creek with 1,861, Columbus 8 with 1,854, Columbus 7 with 1,699, White Oak with 1,175, Saluda with 1,154 and Coopers Gap with 1,051 votes.
