Jazz standards with a holiday twist

Published 10:00 pm Wednesday, November 16, 2016

The Tryon Fine Arts Center Main Stage Series continues with Nnenna Freelon and John Brown Trio on the Veh Stage on Saturday, Dec. 10 at 8 p.m.

Just in time for the holiday season, world-renowned artists Freelon and Brown will present an evening of favorite jazz standards with a holiday twist.

A six-time Grammy nominated jazz singer, composer, producer, and arranger, Freelon brings her signature warmth to the stage. Pulling from a familiar repertoire of jazz hits, Freelon nevertheless “possesses that rarest of qualities – she makes standards sound freshly minted, refreshingly new … her phrasing is original, surprising – she mines the melodies for new and hidden meaning and imaginative spirit that reaches out and bubbles over (Variety Magazine).”

Freelon collaborates on this project with longtime friend and musical colleague, bassist extraordinaire John Brown. Brown has dedicated himself to music and education in equal measure. A professor at Duke University, Brown has also regularly appeared on the Jazz Top 40 and performs to eager audiences around the world. Brown is joined by pianist Cyrus Chestnut and drummer Adonis Rose.

This is the first-ever holiday tour for Freelon and Brown. Tickets are available through the Tryon Fine Arts Center Box Office at tryonarts.org or by calling 828-859-8322.

Season tickets are also available. The 2016-2017 Main Stage Season continues in 2017 with Sierra Hull on Jan. 14; George Winston on March 25; and J. Mark McVey on April 22.
