Western Carolina Hunter Pace and Trail Ride Series – Nov. 6, 2016

The sky was bright and the temperature was a tad chilly for the start of the FENCE Fall Hunter Pace and Trail Ride. However, heavy coats and vests came off quickly as the big warm-up started. What a nice day for a ride at FENCE!

Once again, riders were able to take their mounts onto the Steeplechase Track. What a thrill that is! Riders were taken on some very familiar trails as well. The trails were designed by Dot and Bill Moyer, and Carol and Gary TenBroek.

Reports from riders who had finished the ride were very complimentary of the trails and the bight ribbon markers. Everyone appeared very happy at the end of the ride.

The Landowners who were very gracious in allowing riders to cross their property were David and Shelley Contin-Hubbs, Mike Frye, Karen Graham, Larry and Sondra Hodge, Bill and Kathy Jansen, Judith and Bill Kerns, Brian and Kristi Madey, Joe and Kathy Picone, Deborah and Ron Ricci, Gunnard Rubini, Linda and Myron Schatzburg, Barbara Schuvart, Carl Small, Elizabeth Anne Turner, Larry Wassong, Petesy and Ron Wilson, and Jean Wright.

Registration was held in the all familiar FENCE Show Office. Amy Schmitt, Julie Gordon, and Dana Zygmont, smiling as usual, took registrations, checked Coggins reports, handed out the team numbers, as well as making sure riders got their lunch ticket. Debra Carton and Jim Zygmont made parking very easy with ample room between trailers to tie mounts to. There was no worry of a soupy parking lot since there has been no rain the recent weeks. Joey Cabanis was the timer with Ruth Gold assisting and calling out “Time!” when teams crossed the Finish Line. Joey was full of himself with new jokes. He wants to make sure that we know the general direction of travel and what the markers look like. And of course, he’ll leave the light on!

Riders were met at the Check Point by Marilyn LeFeber, Martha Love, Elise Murphy, and Carol TenBroek. During the three minute rest for the mounts, riders were offered icy cold water and some splendid Port. After the rest period, riders and their mounts were sent happily on their way. A lunch of BBQ plates and sandwiches, hot dogs, slaw and baked beans was set up under the pavilion. Tea and soft drinks were included. Lunch was provided by Foothills BBQ.

The trail was 8.5 miles and took riders over several creek crossings, which were fairly easy to cross with the lack of rainwater. Riders were taken up the hill toward the FENCE House and down the other side to enter the woods. There was a nice balance of wooded areas and open fields. Unfortunately, riders could not play at the water trap. It appears that new grass has been sown. There were jumps, both natural and manmade all along the trails for those who wanted to partake.

The turnout was awesome with 136 riders in 70 teams. Well done! Now, here are the results:

There were a total of 50 riders in 27 teams for the Field Hunter division. The Optimum Time for the Field Hunters was one hour, 51 minutes.
