Landrum High seniors Jamie Connelly and Kenslee Padgett are taking their athletics to the college level, both via scholarships.
Padgett, who ran track for the Cardinals, just signed her intent to attend the Citadel and perform for their track and cross country teams. Connelly will also run track and cross country, for Converse College.
Both signed their respective intents on Wednesday, Nov. 9.
Cardinal track and cross country coach Jeremy Darby described Padgett as “a jack of all trades.”
“She does everything,” Darby said. “She does better on longer distances where she can hold onto a good speed for a long, long time.”
Connelly, who has been a soccer star for the Cardinals, will run track this spring, to better become accustomed to the different events.
“I was really happy (to know she would be competing on the college level),” Connelly said. “I’ve always wanted to be an athlete. I’ve got to practice.”
Padgett is also excited, but also wary.
“It’s really scary, but really exciting at the same time,” she observed. She has met her future Citadel teammates, one of whom, Paige Herbst, is a Landrum graduate.
Knowing Herbst will be on her team is very comforting, Padgett said.
