Between a rock and a hard place

More than 170 kayakers, including a number of professionals from WNC and around the world, competed in American Whitewater’s 21st annual Green River Race on the river’s famed Narrows section on Saturday, Nov. 5. Racers start from the river right side of the long pool below Bride of Frankenstein (rapid), and finish about five minutes and one-half mile later on the river left side of the pool below Rapid Transit, covering about one half of the famed “Monster Mile.” This racer has just negotiated Go Left and Die rapid, so named for the need to negotiate the upper section to the racers’ right, then bear left through this narrow and thunderous opening between two large rocks.
