Tryon Arts and Crafts School’s Crafts & Conversation lecture to feature artist Christine Mariotti
Tryon Arts and Crafts School’s next bi-monthly Crafts & Conversation lunchtime lecture will be held on Thursday, September 8, between 12-1 p.m. at 373 Harmon Field Road and will feature celebrated artist, teacher and consultant, Christine Mariotti, speaking on “The History of Scarves.” The series was developed to provide an inside look into the art of craft for all within our community. Audience members are invited to bring lunch or a snack and beverages will be provided.
At the lecture, Christine will discuss the significance of scarves as an apparel accessory and the use of scarves to commemorate historical events. She will cover early designs, designs of famous designers, and various techniques of scarf painting. She will also demonstrate and hand out booklets that cover 20 ways to tie a scarf and show her own vintage collection of scarves and share their stories.
Christine, a workshop instructor in textile arts at Tryon Arts & Crafts School, has a master’s degree in art education from Nazareth College in Rochester, N.Y., and has taught classes in textiles and fashion illustration, dyeing and textile painting, Batik on paper and silk, tie-dye, devore velvet and Shibori (Japanese fabric manipulation) throughout the country.
As a professional textile artist, she entered into freelance work with many costume companies in southern California and was a consultant and custom dyer for the entertainment industry. In 2000, Christine wrote The Art of Silk Painting, a publication that is part of the Walter Foster series of art books.
Upcoming workshops at Tryon Arts and Crafts School are two courses: Silk Painting Revisited on October 22 and Printmaking on Textiles on November 5.
