Cardinals’ great Sept. 1 volleyball effort falls short

Spartanburg Day, Mauldin and Byrnes brought their volleyball teams to Landrum for a quad meet on September 1 The Cardinals combined skill and teamwork, but came up just short against Spartanburg and Byrnes. 

In the opening match against Spartanburg Day, the Cardinals rallied to tie game one at 17 and again 22. They fought to a 24-23 lead, and fell behind, 25-24, before Nicole Ford’s kill tied the score at 25. From there, the Griffins pulled out a 27-25 win.  In game two, the Cardinals faltered a bit, with Spartanburg Day winning, 25-9 to take that match.

Next opponents were the Mauldin Mavericks, who took a 15-6 lead, but whom had to fight for their athletic lives, when the Cardinals stormed back to eventually tie the game at 22. Mauldin then edged the Cardinals, 25-23. Further results from that match were not available.

Byrnes was able to defeat the Cardinals in three games, with Landrum taking the second game, 25-21. The Rebels however, won games one and three, each by 25-16.

On August 30, the Cardinals dropped the opening game to Clover, 21-25, but rallied to defeat Clover, 25-13, and 25-22, to take the match.

Results from Landrum’s quad meet against Boiling Springs, J.L. Mann and Pickens, were not available at press time.

On Tuesday (Sept. 13), the Cardinals visit Chesnee, and next Thursday (Sept. 15), the visit St. Joseph’s. Next home match is Tuesday, Sept. 20, against Christ Church, with action starting at6:30 p.m.
