For the second concert of the 2016-2017 season, the Tryon Concert Association will present the Chamber Ensemble of the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 8 p.m. at the Tryon Fine Arts Center.
The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields was started in London in 1958. Initially it was an all-string orchestra led by the esteemed Sir Neville Marriner. In 1967, the Chamber Ensemble was established, drawing from the principal players of the full orchestra. This ensemble, which now consists of strings and woodwinds, performs in various configurations ranging from quartet to octet. Its touring engagements are worldwide including France, Germany, Spain, Australia and North and South America. The group’s many recordings include works ranging from the Classical and Romantic periods to modern music.
The Chamber Ensemble is praised for its splendor and grace:
“Their sound is sweet and pure, their ensemble work airtight and the playing purred along effortlessly.” The Washington Post, October 2012.
“What an awesome octet is the Academy Chamber Ensemble. Packing the punch of two quartets, their sound is vivid: bright and highly saturated.” Opus One, November 2013.
“Splendid playing; impeccable sound and balance.” Gramophone.
Tickets for the concert are sold as part of the entire four-concert series. They may be purchased by mail or online. Contact us at tryonconcerts.org or P.O. Box 32, Tryon, N.C., 28782.
