Barbara Ann Shepard Sharkey 1949-2016- It is with a broken heart, but also joy that my beloved Barbara died with me holding one hand and her sister the other. I lift her up to her new journey knowing her pain is gone and her soul is free. Do not think sad thoughts, remember the good times and keep us both in your prayers for we never truly die but move to a new life. Celebrate her life.
Barbara was born at Jacksonville Beach, Florida in 1949, attended University of South Florida and graduated in 1971 where she met her future husband, Richard Sharkey, whom she married in 1979.
She went to work for Amtrak in 1974 and continued with them until she retired disabled in 2000. Richard retired in 2004 to take care of her and in 2007 they moved to Saluda, where she resided until passing on August 10.
A celebration of life will take place sometime in the future. If you had the privilege to know her, she was one of the most kind, loving, thoughtful and brilliant people I will ever know.
Her loss makes the world a darker place. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to Hospice House who took such good care of her in her last days, Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, 130 Forest Glen Drive, Columbus, NC 28722.
