► SC sales tax holiday weekend coming up Aug. 5-7

During the annual sales tax holiday, shoppers are exempt from paying the state’s six percent sales tax and any applicable local taxes on the purchase of school supplies. The tax-free savings applies to clothing, accessories (such as bedspreads and linens), footwear, school supplies (such as book bags), computers and computer equipment (such as printers), but not to jewelry, cosmetics, eyewear, furniture and items placed on layaway.

► City of Landrum to enforce parking ordinance downtown

The City of Landrum will begin enforcing a parking ordinance downtown due to numerous complaints about business owners and employees who take up parking spaces in front of businesses in the downtown area. Starting August 3, any vehicle that is parked for more than two hours during business hours between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. will receive a violation notice and a fine of up to $500. This ordinance, which is directed towards employees and managers of downtown businesses, will not be enforced on Sundays and legal holidays.

► Columbus approves new contract for sludge hauling

The Town of Columbus approved a new contract to haul sludge with Synagro Central, LLC. Columbus held a special meeting on July 21 to discuss the contract. The company that was providing the service previously did not obtain land to transport the sludge that is removed from Columbus’ wastewater treatment plan. Columbus decided to seek out a new company for the service.

► Polk Recreation seeks unique opportunity for
AmeriCorps trails coordinator

The Polk County Recreation Department will have a new AmeriCorps trails coordinator starting in September and is looking for a unique housing opportunity from the community. The new trails coordinator is Seth Young who is looking for affordable housing in Polk County, but AmeriCorps employees are paid a living stipend and likely cannot afford to pay market rates in Polk County. Polk County Recreation Director Jerry Stensland is asking the community for a unique arrangement for Young, including guest houses, apartments, house sitting and trading work for housing. Anyone who can provide an opportunity is urged to contact Stensland at the Polk County Recreation Department.
