With two 6-2 wins (in two games) in the state 2A softball tournament, Landrum is at home for the third round, Wednesday at 5 p.m.
The Cardinals will face the winner of Monday’s Andrew Jackson/Saluda game, played at Andrew Jackson.
On Saturday, the Cardinals toppled Andrew Jackson, at Landrum. It was their 16th consecutive win of the season. They’ve lost but one game. Andrew Jackson had earlier defeated Newberry in the double elimination tournament.
Last Wednesday, in the first round, the Cardinals hosted, and defeated Saluda, 6-2, as the winners scored three times in the first, and three more in the sixth.
In that game, the visiting Tigers swung mostly behind Sydney Davis’s fastballs, and way in front of her off-speed offerings.
After yielding a run in the visitors’ first, Davis found herself ahead, 3-1, by inning’s end. Sarah Price tripled to lead off Landrum’s first, and scored ahead of Alexus Atkins’s double. With one out, Emily Carter doubled Atkins home. With Ciara Sikes at the plate, Carter stole third. Sikes looped a base hit down the right field line, scoring Carter. Sikes stole second, but was stranded there.
Saluda made it 3-2 in the third. There, the score remained until the home sixth. Alyssa Davis led off with an innocent infield looper to short, that was dropped, the ball rolling far enough for her to reach second. Carter’s single to right made it first and third for the Cardinals. Carter then stole second. Sikes singled to drive in two runs, and took second on the throw from the outfield. A wild pitch advanced Sikes to third. From there, she scored sliding on an infield groundout, making it 6-2, Landrum, and ending the scoring.
After the game a modest Sydney Davis said she had some trouble, adding, “I’m glad I had my defense behind me in the bad innings.” Davis noted that she had to “settle in” at times.
Cardinals’ head coach Casey Smith noted that Davis’ off-speed pitches and her focus kept Saluda batters off balance. Davis recently signed her intent to attend Erskine College, and play softball there on a scholarship.
Going into that first round, the Cardinals were the number one seed in the region, and the Tigers fourth.
