Landrum’s Davis to take her pitching to the college level

A right arm with a future belongs to Sydney Davis, Landrum High School senior, who just officially signed her intent to play softball with Erskine College.
Davis, a speedballing, speed-changing softball pitcher with control, caught the eye of Erskine softball coach Eileen Hawkins, as Davis mowed down batters wholesale. Since the age of four, Davis, now 18, has been playing softball.
“I’ve been pitching since I was 8,” she reported. She’s also played travel ball since she was 8.
When did she realize her arm was better than average? “When colleges started asking about me,” she replied. This was around age 13 or 14.
Davis pitched in seventh and eighth grades, and on the varsity level these past four seasons. She’s a big reason the Cardinals are 13-1 overall this season, and 11-1 in the region, going into the Wednesday, April 20 game against Woodruff, whom the Cardinals edged, 1-0 during the teams’ previous meeting.
Now, with a scholarship to play, she says, “It feels really good that they would have an interest in me. College is a whole different level. I’m so excited.”
Unsure of what major she’ll choose, Davis might opt for psychology. She’s been to the Erskine campus, located in Due West, S.C., south of Greenville.
“It’s a small campus, but I love it,” she said. She also likes her future coach, Hawkins.
