Who will speak for you if you can’t speak for yourself?

In association with National Healthcare Decisions Day, Diane Nelson, director of marketing and development for Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, will present ideas for “starting the conversation” and the importance of planning ahead at the April 25 American Association of University Women meeting.
She will discuss healthcare powers of attorney, living wills and other decisions with family members. Diane states, “The greatest gift you can give your family is to have things laid out and in order as far as these things go. It’s not a fun topic, we’d rather talk about food and travel. But ask anyone who has been through making tough healthcare decisions for someone else. It’s the most loving thing you can do for those who are trying to help you.”
“Isn’t it time we talked?” is a resource, similar in some ways to Five Wishes that is used by many hospices. It helps people focus on the important issues revolving around healthcare decisions. It will be available to anyone who comes joins us for this discussion. In this age of information overload and planning every aspect of life, this is something you don’t want to leave to someone else.
Healthcare decisions can be confusing and overwhelming. The key is knowing where to start, who to talk to, what has to be done, who can help, and then to “Just Do It.” So join us as we navigate this vital conversation. You will surely take away some valuable tools.
AAUW is a nationwide network of university women whose mission is to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research.
The Tryon Branch of AAUW will meet Monday, April 25, at 1:30 p.m. at the Tryon Presbyterian Fellowship Hall. The meeting is open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
