Cindy’s Walker’s topic for her presentation March 28 is “Healthy Curiosity – pushing your limits and discovering new things about yourself.” Cindy’s bio is a testimony to her experience on the subject.

 

Cindy refers to herself as a “recovering politician and deactivated activist.” While she may call herself “deactivated,” there’s nothing inactive about her.  She served on the Polk County Board of Commissioners from 2008-2012, helped to establish the Polk County Mobile Recycling Service, and volunteered on many advisory boards during that time.

 

Cindy lives in the Pacolet Valley where she manages her yarn company, Stony Hill Fiber Arts. The company works with farmers in Texas and California and textile mills here in North Carolina and Georgia to produce a line of organic cotton knitting yarns under the label “Pacolet Valley Fiber Company.”

 

To quote Cindy, “I write knitting patterns that are fun to follow: they are painless and require no translation, advanced mathematical interpretation or the ingestion of valium prior to project commencement.”

 

Cindy is the mother of three. Her daughter, Hannah Walker, who graduated from UNC in 2012, received the AAUW’s Clemson Scholarship in 2005. Her oldest son, Ian Harrod, is a local musician and painter. Dylan Walker, her youngest, works at various horse farms, the Saluda Forge, and for some of the builders in the area. He completed the Appalachian Trail in December of 2013.

 

AAUW (American Association of University Women) is a nationwide network of university women whose mission is to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research.

 

The Tryon Branch of AAUW will meet Monday, March 28, at 1:30 p.m. at the Tryon Presbyterian Fellowship Hall. The meeting is open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
