Teamwork got Polk County’s varsity volleyball squad into the first round of the state tournament on Saturday, Oct. 24, and teamwork helped the Wolverines edge a skilled and determined Franklin squad, 3-0, to advance into today’s second round, against West Stanly. Location was not known at press time. Match time is 7 p.m.
On Saturday, West Stanly defeated Parkwood, 3-0, in that first-round match.
At Columbus on Saturday, Polk defeated Franklin, 25-18 in game one; and turned back the Panthers, 25-15 in game two. That set the stage for a fierce third game in which Polk was able to build several five or six-point leads, but always Franklin clawed back, eventually tying the game at 22. After edging ahead, 24-23, the Wolverines put the game away, 25-23, advancing to the second round.
Devastating kills, heroic saves and great saves and feeds put points on the board for the Wolverines. Ashley Love (13), Reagan Waddell (11) and Addie Lynch (8) paced Polk in kills.
“It feels really good,” Wolverine head coach Molly Hill beamed after the last point was made. “My girls played really good. Everyone really stepped up. I’m really proud of them.”
Hill, whose confidence in her players knows no bounds, added, “I want to win, keep pushing.”
