The City of Saluda is beginning to collect back taxes.
The Saluda Board of Commissioners met Oct. 12 and heard from city clerk Robert O’Dell that he has been working for several months with Donna Fox with the City of Hendersonville to collect back taxes.
Saluda this year began collecting its property taxes through Henderson and Polk counties.
Since O’Dell began his employment, he and Fox have narrowed the number of properties that still have outstanding balances. Several properties are in bankruptcy, which will allow Saluda to collect as a creditor.
O’Dell told commissioners he is meeting with an attorney to review the legal process to submit properties for foreclosure in order to collect the outstanding balances.
O’Dell also said he is working with the Polk County Tax Office which is working with a foreclosure attorney as well.
There are an estimated 15 properties with outstanding tax balances with O’Dell saying before interest the base amount is an estimated $15,000.
“I think it will be a substantial sum when it’s all said and done,” O’Dell told commissioners.
