TR&HC Announces 2015 Scholarship Recipients

Published 11:36 pm Thursday, July 2, 2015

Tryon Riding & Hunt Club is proud to announce the recipients of its 2015 educational scholarships. TR&HC has been sponsoring scholarships for area students for 33 years. Its original scholarship was introduced in 1982 and continues to be administered by the Polk County Community Foundation.

Two additional scholarships were created in 1996 and reflect TR&HC’s founding mission from 1925, which is to support the area’s general well being and preserve its equestrian traditions. These scholarships are administered by TR&HC and are awarded to students who both excel academically and are involved in equestrian activities.

For the first time, the number of those scholarships was increased to five in 2015 and the amount given totaled $10,000, or five times the 2014 total. Congratulations to the following recipients for 2015:

TR&HC was also asked to administer two new scholarships offered by the Tryon Equestrian Foundation, following TR&HC’s established selection criteria. Those scholarships were awarded to:

• Hayden Edney, a graduate of North Henderson High School, who is planning to attend Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College.

All of the scholarships were awarded based on applications submitted and interviews conducted by a selection panel of three: Digit Laughridge, a retired executive from Campobello; Connie Lomax, a longtime equestrian from Polk County; and former Polk County Agricultural Extension Director John Vining. The scholarship application and selection process was led by TR&HC Programs Coordinator Shelley Griffitts.
