It’s the same old story

All too often the decisions we make are harmful to our pets. Of course (thank God) this doesn’t apply to all pet owners. Most of us consider our pets as part of our extended family and the thought of harming them in any way would never enter our minds.

But then there is another situation, which unfortunately I run into all too often. This occurs when a relationship falls apart and one of them harms an animal to hurt the other party. Sadly, the signs of this occurring are usually there long before the breakup. The offending party will be indifferent and maybe mildly abusive toward a pet. The other party will turn a blind eye, more concerned with maintaining the relationship than halting the abuse. More often than not, you can bet that the abuse will accelerate and eventually turn toward the partner.

COLUMNSpecialCases Molly

We will never be able to stop these cowards from harming helpless animals but I promise anyone who comes to me willing to remove a pet from such a situation, I will do everything in my power to help.
Molly is a 13-month-old Jack Russell terrier. She was brought to my attention as part of an abusive situation where she was struck and blood was showing in her stool and urine.  Fearing internal injuries, she was brought to Landrum Vet for x-rays and tests.

I met with the injured party and was assured that Molly would not be put into that situation again. I went in to meet Molly and was greeted by the sweetest girl you’d ever meet. As I spoke with her to reassure her confidence, she kept bearing her teeth in what I call a doggy smile. I couldn’t stop the tears from flowing as I opened her cage and gently held her in my arms. I’ll never cease to be moved by when an abused animal maintains a loving demeanor. I’ve seen it often at FHS and have tearfully held many of these wonderful animals in my arms.

Good news, Molly did not have any internal injuries and the blood was most likely occurring from stress. She is home with a caring partner, and others who I won’t name paid the whole bill along with a gift to Lennie’s Kids.
I’ve told many caring people that it is impossible to stop all the abuse but if you don’t turn away from what is within your purview, a lot can be curtailed. I’m certain that Molly will never again face an abusive situation because of the wonderful people involved in her rescue. I am pleased to count them as new supporters and honored to have met little Molly Sue.

Molly did not learn to be mean because of her treatment, instead she could teach us all how to love. If only people could have that love inside them.  I can only thank God that He sends us animals such as Molly to set a good example for us.

Thanks for listening.
