Wolverine women lose to Cougars Friday

Polk County outscored Mountain Heritage, 21-13, in the fourth quarter of women’s varsity basketball at Burnsville on Friday, but the Cougars, who led 43-18, after three quarters, hung on to hand the Wolverines their second conference loss.
Polk goes into this Tuesday evening’s game at Brevard at 6-3 overall, and 0-2 in WHC competition.
At Mountain Heritage, Kara Overholt (20 points, three assists) and Hayley Kropp (14 points, 13 rebounds and five assists) combined for 34 of Polk’s 48 points. Freshman Autumn Owen added eight. India Godlock scored two, and added three assists, with Sarah Phipps scoring four.
The Cougars led, 17-10 after the first quarter, and 25-19 at the half, at which time, it was anyone’s game. However Mountain Heritage, now 8-0 overall and 2-0 in the conference proved a stern host.
After tonight’s action, Polk resumes play on January 2, hosting conference rival Mitchell. On Jan. 6, the Wolverines travel to Avery, another WHC rival. On Jan. 7, Polk hosts A.C Reynolds.
