Building leads of 11-2, 14-2 and 29-6, Polk County crushed East Henderson, 57-15, in varsity women’s basketball action at Columbus on Wednesday.
Polk held the Eagles to just six, four, two and three points, in quarters one through four, respectively. East’s only basket in the fourth quarter was a resounding three pointer at the final buzzer.
The Wolverines, who travel to Mountain Heritage this evening, to play one of the top Western Highlands Conference teams, are 6-2, after also edging T.C.Roberson, 46-44, on Tuesday.
In that game, Kara Overholt led Polk with 18 points, with Haley Kropp adding a dozen points, four assists and three steals. Sarah Phipps scored eight, and grabbed eight rebounds, while India Godlock contributed four assists.
On Wednesday against East Henderson, Polk led 19-6, after the first quarter, 31-10 at the half, and 42-12 after three quarters.
Phipps led the Wolverines with 17 points, and grabbed nine rebounds. Hayley Kropp added 15 points, and also snagged nine rebounds.
“We were able to control the boards,” understated coach Brandy Alm. “We were able to capitalize on our defense,”Alm added. “We tried to control the tempo.”
As the Wolverines built a commanding lead, they initially hurried some of their shots, but later, played more deliberate offense, and put the game further out of reach for the Eagles.
“It’s fun to watch,” said Alm, after her team managed an easier win than usual, but Alm noted that the Eagles were without their best scorer.
“We’ll find out how much we’ve improved, when we play Friday,” she remarked. Mountain Heritage is 7-0 overall, and 1-0 in conference play.
