Ann Pitman Hutcherson Whitmire, 81, of Mill Spring, N.C. passed away Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2014 in her home.
A Polk County native, she was the daughter of the late Judson Clyde and Lizzie Wilson Pitman. As an elementary school teacher, students were always her top priority. Retiring after 34 years, she taught at Stearn’s School, Kingstree Elementary, Williamsburg Academy, Northwood Middle School, Brushy Creek Elementary and Buena Vista Elementary. She was a member of the Polk County school board for many years, President of the N.C. School Board Association, and served on the national school board association. She was a member of Cooper’s Gap Baptist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher and clerk.
Surviving are her husband of 26 years, Grover Whitmire; two sons, John Robert (Robie) Hutcherson, Jr. (Jodie Everts) of Mill Spring, N.C., and Timothy Clyde Hutcherson, Sr. (Susan) of Greer, S.C..
She was preceded in death by her first husband, J. Robert (Rob) Hutcherson, Sr. who died in 1979. She has seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Ann also has four stepchildren, 11 step-grandchildren, and seven step-great-grandchildren. She has one sister, Kathleen McMillian of Columbus, N.C. that was also her best friend.
Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, 2014 at Columbus Baptist Church, Columbus, N.C. with Rev. Don Hollifield and Rev. Bo Caulder officiating.
Burial will follow the service in Woodlawn Cemetery, Greenville, S.C.
The family will receive friends from 1 – 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at Columbus Baptist Church.
