On Friday, April 11, the Polk County Middle School Model Bridge Building Team placed first in the Middle School Division at the NC Department of Transportation (NCDOT) Model Bridge Building Competition in Raleigh, NC.
To qualify for the state finals PCMS won the western regional competition at Morganton, NC. Middle School team members include Hayden Gary, Taylor Warren, Tiler Pace, Haley Lawter, Emmett Zacharias, Kalob Jackson, Jeffrey Weaver and Dr. Pettis, coach.
For the competition, the PCMS Model Bridge teams constructed a balsa wood bridge using the specifications provided by the NCDOT, wrote a report on the history of bridge building, drew a full scale blue print of their bridge and gave an oral presentation explaining the merits of the bridge the team entered in the competition.
PCMS outscored all teams in both the Middle School and High School divisions. This was the PCMS Bridge Building Team’s fifth time qualifying for the N.C. state finals in the past six years, but the first time winning the competition.
