The Tryon Garden Club’s February meeting will feature guest speaker, Don Surrette, presenting “Where there be mountains, there be chestnuts” on Feb. 19 at 1 p.m. at the Tryon Depot Room at 22 Depot Street in Tryon.
Surrette will focus on the efforts to create a blight resistant American chestnut tree, of which an estimated four billion were destroyed by chestnut blight in the early 20th century.
A charter member and former board member of the Carolinas Chapter of The American Chestnut Foundation, Surrette is also a native of Transylvania County and member of a family of farmers, loggers and carpenters that dates back to the late 1700s. The public is invited to attend.
