Stanley Cook Byars, 92, passed away on Jan. 5, 2014. Stanley, affectionately known as Papa, was surrounded by family.
A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014 at St. John’s United Methodist Church, 321 S. Oakland Ave., Rock Hill, SC 29730 with Reverend Debra Quilling Smith officiating. A private burial will be in Forest Hills Cemetery prior to the service.
Papa was a “preacher’s kid,” the son of Rev. John Pinkney Byars and Harriet Ruth Stevick Byars, and spent his childhood in Methodist parsonages. Shortly after high school, he met and married the love of his life, Mildred Sharpton of Abbeville.
Papa is survived by his “Millie” and his daughters, Harriet Peoples (Alan) of Tryon, and Mary Jane Shuler (Dr. Donnie Shuler) of York, S.C. He was also adored by his six grandchildren: Elizabeth LeBlanc (Joe) of Taos, NM, John Shuler of Austin, Texas, Harriet Shuler of Denver, Colo, William Shuler of New York City, Alan T Peoples (Paula) of Harrisburg, N.C. and Seth Peoples (Laura Weaver) of Greensboro, N.C. Also surviving are three great-grandchildren: John Robert LeBlanc and Laura Carolina LeBlanc of Taos, NM and Harrison Alan Peoples of Harrisburg, N.C.
Through the years, Mr. Byars worked in the maintenance department of St. Phillips Hospital, in quality control during Bowater’s construction and at both Marshall Oil Company and Marshall Tire Company.
Mr. Byars is best remembered as a true craftsman of furniture construction and antique restoration. Some of his best restorations are on display in historic BraUonsville.
The family offers special thanks for the exceptional care provided by the Hospice & Community Care staff, “the girls” at Piedmont Retail Pharmacy and Dr. Pam Sinclair and her office staff.
