Mary Frances Libby Hales

Mary Frances Libby Hales, 83, of Tryon, formerly of Pebble Beach and San Francisco, Calif. died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012 in the Hospice House of the Carolina Foothills, Landrum.
Born in Edison, Wash., she was the daughter of the late Roland Cunningham Libby and Georgianna Stout Libby and widow of Albert Joseph Hales, who died in 1993. She was an alumnus of U.C. Berkeley and a member of Chi Omega Sorority.
Mrs. Hales was very active in many organizations, including Steps to Hope, Foothills Humane Society, FENCE, Old Tryon Foot Beagles, Tryon Riding and Hunt Club and Foothills Riding Club. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Cross, Tryon.
Surviving are one son, Stephen Gray Hales (Louise) of Vacaville, Calif.; one step-daughter, Sandra Jean Hales Clark of Tampa, Fla.; one sister, Ann Libby Carlsmith of Hinesburg, Vt.; grandmother to Esther Gray Hales and Michael Sean Doyle; one special friend, Beth Perkins of Rutherfordton, N.C. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, one great-grandchild, one niece, Laura Carlsmith of Hinesburg, Vt. and two nephews, Bruce Carlsmith of Woodside, Calif. and Duncan Carlsmith of Madison, Wisc.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22 in the Episcopal Church of Holy Cross with The Very Reverend Dr. Michael Doty officiating.
