Dawn Greene was recently named O.P. Earle’s Reading Teacher of the Year for the 2011-2012 school year.
“My greatest desire is for my students to leave my classroom with a love for reading,” Greene said.
“I believe that if I can inspire and motivate them to love reading that I can in turn inspire and motivate them to grow as readers, but first I must spark a love for reading. A love for reading for some students is natural, but for a student who has always been frustrated with reading, love and reading are not words that go together,” said Greene.
Greene said surrounding students with opportunities to read, write, speak, think and be successful in a safe community environment is the foundation of everything that goes on in her classroom.
“Teaching students to read is more than making a lesson plan or teaching a mini-lesson. Teaching students to read is an art, a delicate balance of modeling, motivating, inspiring and cheerleading… some days you are the coach, the captain, the quarterback and the cheerleader.”
