Nina Simone’s daughter Lisa Stroud, known in her singing career as “Simone,” recently made her symphonic debut in Vancouver. The program featured many compositions previously performed by well-known singer Nina Simone, including “Lilac Wine,” which was transcribed for Lisa by composer/arranger Crys Armbrust of Tryon.

According to John Janes’ review of Simone’s symphonic debut, “Anyone coming to this concert hoping for a younger version of Nina Simone singing all her hits might have been disappointed. Simone is very much her mother’s daughter; she certainly possesses the power and timbre of her voice, with even more stage confidence and an ability to engage with her audience, but she is very much her own person with her own vocal style.”

Armbrust, who is also executive director of Tryon’s Nina Simone Project, said that a number of the pieces on Simone’s Vancouver performance will be on the program during NinaFest, set for September 9 – 11 in Tryon. Simone, whose mother was born Eunice Waymon in Tryon, will take part in this festival.
